Campaign against press closures and jailing of journalists

At the end of April, 17 pro-reform papers in Iran were closed on orders of the press court. The closure used emergency power and bypassed even the current restrictive press laws. A number of Journalists have been jailed.

Akbar Gangi, whose disclosures on the serial killings of writers and dissident politicians so inflamed the ultra-conservatives, was arrested on his return from a conference in Berlin at the invitation of the Heinrich Boell Institute. Latif Safari, publisher of the previously banned Neshat, had his appeal against a two and a half year prison sentence rejected. Another Neshat editor Mashallah Shamsolvae'zin, was already in prison. In Ghazvin, a woman Journalist Fatemeh Kulahi was arrested and in Tehran publisher Shahla Lahigi, lawyer Merhangiz Kar and student activist Ali Afhsari have been arrested. Further attacks on the press and arrest of Journalists are believed to be imminent.

This is an open challenge to the right to free speech, expression and access to information, in a way that is totally unsurpassed in the last 21 years. It is a clear attempt to claw back the gains of the last two years. If the perpetuators succeed in their aims, then the whole process of change in Iran will face a major stumbling block.

Therefore: We the undersigned:

1. Demand the immediate release of the newspapers, weeklies and monthly from the illegal ban imposed on them.

2. Demand the unconditional release of jailed Journalists.

3. Demand an immediate end to the campaign to intimidate the press.

4. Ask the media outside Iran to place sanctions on the propaganda machinery of the Islamic Republic and especially on the radio television network (IRIB) a tool in the hands of the ultra-conservative faction. Any co-operation with IRIB, including access to international news, sport and entertainment media, as well as access to satellite broadcasting should cease.

5. Call on all Journalist unions, writers associations, organisations devoted to free speech and human rights, the United Nations, the European and other democratically elected parliaments to put the greatest pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran to stop its suppression of freedom of expression and to remove the ban on the press.

6. We pledge to place whatever means at our disposal to get the voice of the internal opposition heard outside, and more importantly, inside Iran.
